Building With the Hands
“There are objects for which we have found uses. We use them, but almost certainly not the way the visitors use them. I am positive that in the vast majority of cases we are hammering nails with microscopes.” - Boris and Arkady Strugasky, Roadside Picnic, 1972
Building With the Hands is an investigation project with presents an alternative method of construction in order to achieve less material waste in stone quarrying in the UK. The project seeks to further develop assembly techniques, by positioning design at the core of manufacturing systems.
This project was done under the Research unit of Rotor as a continuation of the field research for Opalis UK. The project is located on the outskirts of Swanson, a 3.000 people inhabitant British town on the coast of Dorset.
Building With the Hands worked in collaboration with the local community of stone wallers and the local limestone quarry Haysom Purbeck Stone Quarry.
